Cluth's Call by Gavin Matthew is an urban fantasy supernatural thriller set in Midwest America during the 70s. Inspired by African folklore, the book follows the dynamic duo of Maceo Moreland (Pookie), a scholarly librarian with a penchant for ancient texts, and Helena La Croix, a trigger-happy foul-mouthed field agent. They work for the Midwest chapter of O.R.I., a global organization dedicated to protecting humans from otherworldly demons. After battling a demon named the Stomach Lord and saving Roberta, a nurse, Pookie and Helena return to headquarters, only to find themselves interrogated by a couple of FBI agents, one of them a hardcore racist. When Pookie learns that his old friend Adrian Tunde might have spawned Bawlha, he decides to pay him a visit. However, he must resist the power of Cluth, a demon whispering in his mind.
Cluth's Call is a wild rollercoaster of a read that keeps you on the edge of your seat with plenty of thrills and swashbuckling action. Author Gavin Matthew writes in a clear-cut and concise manner, using his words efficiently to keep the prose sharp and minimalistic, which is easily accessible to the reader. The plot moves at a blistering pace, and you will be hard-pressed to find a single dull moment. I found the characters quirky and colorful, seamlessly blending into the narrative and the story world. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Adisa and Helena. If you're looking for a book that feels like the high fantasy version of the hit movie MIB, check out Cluth's Call.
