Clear Gold by Misha Herwin is the story of Mouse, a young woman raised by an adoptive family as her parents died of sickness when she was young. Trained as a fighter so that one day she could become a guard on one of the water wagons, she is excited when she wins, but when others break the rules, she is upset and decides to leave the town she has called home. It's not just the unhappiness of her not being able to take her rightful place, it's the fact that she has always felt like an outcast and that nobody wanted her. She teams up with the mysterious Lanyon, who rode in with the merchant who came in the wagon train. Joining with Lanyon is the start of a journey that Mouse doesn't know she is going on. Will her dreams come true or will she end up dead?

Clear Gold by Misha Herwin is a little confusing at first, referencing things that happened before the story starts and not really giving any history on things, but little Mouse draws you in. Her feelings make you feel for her and you start to relate to her as a young and confused teen who hasn't found her place in the world. The imagery is clear and places you right there with Mouse and Lanyon as they embark on their journey. I will be watching for more books by Misha Herwin to see if Mouse's story continues. I'd like to know if the hurt and confused Mouse becomes the strong woman that you can see in the scared young girl.
