Harry Bosch is back in a case that's not cold, but still old. On the first day of the new year, a dog brings back a bone to its owner. When the bone is discovered to be human, Bosch and his partner, Edgar, get the call. The bone is revealed to come from a child who died around 1980. In Michael Connelly's latest murder mystery, City of Bones, Bosch is faced with not only the mystery of who first abused, then murdered a child, but skirts policy with a new romance. There's also a leak in the department that ends in tragedy. And of course, department politics are never far out of the picture. Suspects are plenty: a pedophile; an alcoholic father with regrets; an ex-con. And just when he thinks the case is wrapped up...well, that ol' Bosch intuition niggles its way to the forefront and won't let it end.
I've enjoyed every Connelly mystery featuring Harry Bosch. With City of Bones, I was not disappointed. Connelly goes in deep. Not only is there a good story with the mystery, but character development also plays a key role. The writing is solid with everything in its place. Cop knowledge, procedure, the unraveling of the evidence in precise order with the sure knowledge that everything is revealed...and all the reader has to do is sit back and enjoy. When I pick up a Connelly novel, I know I'm in for a good tale and this latest is no exception. There no conquering Connelly.
