City of a Thousand Spies is Book 3 from The Virtuosic Spy series by Kathryn Guare. Conor McBride is a famous violinist who uses his occupation as a cover for his spy missions. He and his girlfriend, Kate, accept an assignment in Prague to help Farid, an Iranian, to defect. The mission becomes complicated when Farid disappears, which exposes another agent, and they notice someone following them around. The Labuts, whom they stay with, are unconventional with secrets to hide. In fact, Conor and Kate are convinced that almost everyone they meet is distrustful, and they do not know who are allies or double agents while undercover.
Kathryn Guare’s protagonist, Conor McBride, is the main character in City of a Thousand Spies and in The Virtuosic Spy series. It is a story that has double-crossing schemes and never ending lies, so most characters look dubious. Kate is a bit temperamental while Conor is more rational and patient. The general plot is interesting and a couple of characters try to behave seriously, but are amusing when doing so. City of a Thousand Spies is Kathryn Guare’s third novel in the series. Her previous books give more insight into the backgrounds of Conor and Kate, but the author includes sufficient information in this book so readers will be able to comprehend some of the things they do.
