Christmas is a holiday that has a special place in our hearts. Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait’s Christmas of the Heart: A Collection of Short Stories is an anthology of short fiction and a novella all themed around this special season. This uplifting set features 17 stories and finishes with a novella titled, The Reindeer Ranch. Sure, the whole family can gather around in the living room to watch a classic Christmas film, but for good measure, you can treat yourself each day to one story from this collection. You can also read all of them in one sitting as a new Yuletide activity to dig into. While Cowperthwait writes in the fantasy genre, she manages to capture life’s profound moments within the Yuletide spirit. This is a splendid collection that reflects the human experience during the most wonderful time of the year.
Cheryl RushCowperthwait can touch your heart without being sentimental. Her facility for writing fantasy is reflected in the surreal as well as in the fantastic qualities of her Christmas stories. In “O Christmas Tree,” for example, a woman longing for her beloved Jimmy breaks into joyful tears when a red cardinal shows her signs that Jimmy is with her all along. “The Fairy with One Wing,” on the other hand, is a pure fantasy about a one-winged fairy named Twitterbell, who makes a Christmas wish to have a new wing, a new home, and the best of friends. “The Reindeer Ranch” is perhaps the highlight of this collection--a romantic Christmas love story that will resonate deep in your heart and memory. If you are planning to read contemporary Christmas stories, this collection is the one to pick up.
