Choose The Sun by Kent Safford is a captivating debut science fiction novel that makes you rethink the concept of traditional gender roles. It's about Edgar Marten, a Nobel Laureate, and Lawrence Williams, a university academic dean, who have to deal with an unprecedented situation. After Edgar suffers an accidental electrical shock in his kitchen, he learns about an overnight outbreak of food poisoning among young adults that will soon turn the whole world upside down. The symptoms may mimic food poisoning, but this new disease places those who recently turned twenty-one into a coma. Those who survive are forced to accept their new fate or end their lives. Thus, Edgar, Lawrence, and the best experts in every discipline work together to manage the crisis that created chaos, confusion, hysteria, paranoia, and death everywhere.
Filled with intriguing scenes and intelligent characters, Choose The Sun by Kent Safford exposes its readers to a fascinating story framed around time travel, apocalyptic visions, and a metamorphosis process. Kent Safford uses the concept of dualism to make us rethink the gender roles in our lives and if they should be different from our biological sex. The complexity of this novel may create an internal conflict within its readers, making them empathize with the characters. However, it has so many elements of surprise, suspense, and mystery that even a non-fan of science fiction can enjoy it. This remarkable novel transports you into a whole different world with new lives and new identities. I dare to hope for a sequel.
