James Rawtenstall is determined to take his deceased son’s child away from his former daughter-in-law.  In a desperate effort to escape her father-in-law, Adelaide Rawtenstall signs on as a mail order bride.  She meets an impetuous young sailor during her voyage to her new home on Damnation Island.  The young man declares his love for her.  Waiting for her is her husband-to-be, a man twice her age.  He is not much to look at, but he has a kind heart.

Cherished by Beth Heywood is a delightful read.  The plot has depth.  I was enthralled with the life Adelaide lived on Damnation Island.  Heywood paints a word picture of life in the colony.  The characters are believable and likable.  John was kind and loving.  It was easy to doubt Luke’s sincerity.  Adelaide was brave and loving, but more importantly, she was loyal.  I did notice one major mistake.  On page 184 Heywood, uses the name John when it should be Luke.  “John and I had two more children…”  This is Heywood’s first novel.  I look forward to her next.

What an unusual fantasy/romance/adventure novel! Much of the action is set on a place called Damnation Island and I enjoyed the writer's lively conception of what life was like for the settlers there (even if it was entirely fictional? I plead ignorance.) I also liked the occasional brief glimpses into the scientific side of things; what was happening geologically, while the characters, all-ignorant of these impending seismal changes, carry on as usual. In fact, I think Ms. Heywood has a real gift for this kind of blending of scientific fact and fiction. It seems to be a genre not many can tackle successfully, but I'd venture a guess that this is where Ms. Heywood's writerly talents lie. I look forward to her characters acquiring more complexity in future novels. I'll give Cherished four "first novel" stars, and I hope the author will go on to further develop her gift for historical fiction!

Beth Heywood has written a very cool first novel. I would put it up against any of the top books in this genre. Highly recommended!
