Caveman's Daughter by Jeffrey W. Tenney is a time travel novel that will leave an impression on you. This book is a follow-up to Tenney's earlier Caveman, which is also a time travel story about an archaeologist named Trent Marshall who finds himself teleporting back to 40,000 B.C.E. when Cro-Magnons warred against the Neanderthals. Trent's daughter, Emily, finds him and makes it back to the current time. This second novel, however, centers on Emily as she tries to stop modern opportunists from taking advantage of and destroying the tribes of that same past. She finds herself alone in her fight for them but knows in her own heart that saving them is worth the risk.
This is an imaginative, well-plotted story with compelling characters and rich detail. You get the feeling that this subject matter is close to the author's heart, and his authentic, authoritative style keeps you invested in the story. Emily is a strong character, but she has vulnerabilities too, which make her very relatable. Readers will find themselves wondering how they would feel and what they would do if they were transported back to the Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal days, or were faced with this situation. Tenney is skilled at shaping scenarios, people, and places that ring true. It's not hard to imagine that if this were fact instead of fiction, some group somewhere would be out to exploit these ancient civilizations, or even time travel itself. The author crafts the plot with good timing, excellent dialogue, and a satisfying end. Caveman's Daughter by Jeffrey W. Tenney is a novel that will stay with you for a long time to come.
