Luke, the protagonist in Caught Inside by Jamie Deacon, goes on what is supposed to be a relaxing beach holiday with his girlfriend, Zara. Luke takes his surfboard and has the intention of spending as much time on it as possible. What he did not expect was that meeting Theo, Zara's gay cousin, changes everything in his life. He feels closer to Theo than to Zara, and soon he learns that the feelings are the same on the other side. But are they so? Why is Theo so quiet when it comes to his ex-boyfriend, and why does everyone believe Theo is still in love with him? And the last thing Luke wants to do is hurt Zara. He will have to make some hard decisions, or will he take the easy way out?
Caught Inside by Jamie Deacon is an exciting coming of age story of a teenager who realizes that he is more attracted to his girlfriend's cousin than to his girlfriend. The beach setting and the sometimes dramatic weather are used wonderfully by Jamie Deacon to add to the plot, and stress certain developments. The cast of characters is small compared to other stories, but that works very well as you can actually remember who's who without having to backtrack on the pages. Each character has a role and nobody is superfluous. I wish more authors would learn the importance of not overcrowding the pages with dozens of characters that have basically no meaning. Jamie Deacon did a great job in telling the story of Luke, building tension, releasing it, just to build it again. I'd definitely recommend this book to young adults and also older readers with an interest in gay coming of age stories with a twist (or two).
