In Caught in a Web by Joseph Lewis, another boy from the high school in Waukesha has been found dead, overdosed on a concoction of heroin and fentanyl. Detectives Jamie Graff, Pat O’Connor and Paul Eiselmann are called in to solve the spate of similar deaths. The key is to locate the supplier of fentanyl and dismantle the drug ring. Meanwhile, MS-13 gang member Ricardo Fuentes arrives to locate who is trying to take over their patch. He also has a personal vendetta to take care of. George Tokay, a fifteen-year-old boy, is on his radar and Fuentes aims to kill George and his family as revenge for the death of his cousin. As Fuentes closes in on George, the detectives uncover a shocking link to the murders, the drug suppliers and the high school.
In Caught in a Web, author Joseph Lewis has created a fantastic suspense novel. From the first chapter, the story line had me hooked. Each character was rich and three-dimensional. The dialogue was authentic to the characters and brought them to life. There were many twists and turns throughout the plot, and the ending was gripping and totally unexpected. The plot moved forward constantly and the conflicts involving Fuentes were engaging. The author clearly has a great knowledge of young people, how they interact with their peers and adults. There were scenes of violence but they were totally necessary for the plot. George was a great protagonist, strong and fearless, and Fuentes’ character was pure evil. I will be reading more from this author; the way he can set a scene and build tension is superb. Highly recommended.
