Carbon Monoxide Not Only a Killer is a frightening look at something so many people take for granted. Carbon monoxide is quite common in our environment, and many people are aware of the dangers due to car exhausts, gas fires, appliances, fireplaces, water heaters, dryers, and cooking stoves. In fact there are many other sources of carbon monoxide, such as candles, matches, joss sticks or incense, cigarette smoke, and charcoal grills. Deborah Percy, the author of this book, runs a home heating business in the U.K. and has a personal mission to make people aware of this danger.
Percy includes many stories of individuals that were harmed or killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. CO, as it is called, is an odorless gas with extremely tragic consequences. Since it reduces the oxygen in the blood if one is exposed, body tissue can be killed, resulting in amputations if the person is lucky enough to survive at all. It can also cause brain damage and a feeling of illness before it builds up to the point of being fatal. It is most often known to kill people in their sleep since it renders them unconscious and unable to go for help.
The main point of Carbon Monoxide is to urge everyone to get CO detectors for their home and also to practice safe procedures. Gas appliances should be checked every year, chimneys should be swept, and sources of fire should never be used indoors. Individuals have died from bringing charcoal grills into the home since the grills still give off small amounts of CO. CO can come in through open windows and doors or if the home is not properly sealed. Percy's book is a valuable warning that must be heeded to protect ourselves and our families.
