This mother and daughter writing duo often make friends with the pirates, vagabonds, and wayward ghosts they find along the way. This book was inspired by a trip to Maine, where they traveled with a real Captain, heard about the many ghosts who still frequent the state’s inns, and paddled with a porpoise. In their spare time, they care for three mostly black cats and gather ingredients for potion-making.

Raven is a fantastical pirate story where a clever young captain tricks a scoundrel at his own game.
The gorgeous illustrations by Salvador Capuyan have the perfect tone and style to draw young readers in instantly. They easily complement L.L. Faer and E. Raven's story that is fun but also filled with the trickery and danger that one can expect from an adventurous pirate tale. Wit, bravery, and kindness are ethics that are deftly incorporated in the storytelling. It’s a quick and great read for a one-on-one or in a group. In fact, I think Captain Bad Breaker and the Cotton Candy Ship is a perfect bedtime story for the young ones － a gutsy dream about good pirates with a colorful flying ship will be a delight for kids. Overall, this is a wonderful children's book and I'm sure young readers will be eager to join Captain Elaine Mermain and her motley crew's next adventure.
