“Captain “Bad” Breaker was a dirty rotten scoundrel by all accounts. If you checked in at the Bad Breaker Inn, he would greet you with a toothy grin. The next morning, when a few select coins or a pair of trick yo-yos went missing, he would profess sympathy and concern. Word of his dastardly deeds traveled far too slow to reach anyone who could stop them. Bad Breaker had never met a woman, man, or child he could not cheat, fool, or trick. That was until the Cotton Candy Ship landed on the beach that glassy sea and balmy sky day.” Captain Bad Breaker and the Cotton Candy Ship by L.L. Faer and E. Raven is a fantastical pirate story where a clever young captain tricks a scoundrel at his own game.
The gorgeous illustrations by Salvador Capuyan have the perfect tone and style to draw young readers in instantly. They easily complement L.L. Faer and E. Raven's story that is fun but also filled with the trickery and danger that one can expect from an adventurous pirate tale. Wit, bravery, and kindness are ethics that are deftly incorporated in the storytelling. It’s a quick and great read for a one-on-one or in a group. In fact, I think Captain Bad Breaker and the Cotton Candy Ship is a perfect bedtime story for the young ones - a gutsy dream about good pirates with a colorful flying ship will be a delight for kids. Overall, this is a wonderful children's book and I'm sure young readers will be eager to join Captain Elaine Mermain and her motley crew's next adventure.
