Campaigning Can Be Deadly: A Discount Detective Mystery #2 by Charlotte Stuart is the second entry in the series. It reads well as a standalone novel, a wonderful meld of murder, mystery, and sleuthing that will have readers on the edge of their seats. The novel starts with a simple premise: the campaign signs for Nathan Knight, the favorite local candidate, are being stolen. Pennywise Investigations is hired to find out who is stealing them. The investigation leads to a dead body. When they are told that their services are no longer needed, Pennywise knows they can’t back out, especially after a murder is committed right under their nose. As they investigate the murder, Cameron Chandler and her colleague, Yuri Webster, become entangled in a deadly game with increasing body counts and their lives on the line. Can they solve the murder before it is too late?
This is a story with quirky, believable characters. The narrative voice captures the point of view of Cameron, and it is light and engaging, never failing in its quirkiness. I loved the deft handling of characters and particularly liked the way Cameron’s partner is written. She is portrayed as someone addicted to junk food who uses any opportunity to have some. Her quirky nature shines through, and even in very tight and dangerous situations, the humor finds a place. Campaigning Can Be Deadly is a twisty tale with strong plot points and unforgettable characters. It is filled with mystery and suspense, and readers will be engrossed in the sleuthing work of the lead characters. Overall, Charlotte Stuart’s novel is a fast-paced, delightful read that will have fans following the characters through every page. I couldn’t put it down.
