Calvin’s Great Slide is a work of fiction in the fantasy and emotional drama subgenres. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author Colin Moore. The book follows Calvin after his father's death prompts his mother to move them in with his grandparents. Overwhelmed not just by grief but by the change of environment from the noisy city to the quiet countryside, Calvin’s life changes when he inherits a magic magnifying glass and a parchment, which help him explore exciting new places and discover adventure, though like all adventures it is not without danger.
Grief is a powerful motivator for fictional characters to leave their comfort zones and begin their hero’s journey, but when used tactlessly, it can make the stories that feature it feel cheap. Fortunately for this book, author Colin Moore is able to articulate a part of grief that young people feel where the world doesn’t fully make sense, and a new normal has to be sought out and even earned. There’s an understanding of the complexity of emotion on display in these pages that’s rare to see in similar works. The adventure Calvin undertakes as a result of this is a stunning piece of escapism that adds a fresh angle to the coming of age story. Overall, Calvin’s Great Slide is an exciting and engaging adventure that I enjoyed reading from start to finish, with an imaginative world and a compelling journey through it undertaken by a well-realized and dynamic protagonist. I recommend this book to readers of all ages.
