The tagline for Calkwalk to Murder by MK Scott is “A baking show stirs up a lot more than batter,” and that is the perfect description of this fun and easy to read mystery. As soon as the crew and contestants arrive at the picturesque The Painted Lady Inn in the small town of Legacy, drama ensues. Donna, the proprietor of The Painted Lady Inn, desperately wants to be a contestant in The Majestic Bakeoff but is disappointed to learn there are plenty of contestants already. Donna calls herself a professional observer rather than a busybody, and she puts her professional observing into action right away when a contestant is murdered. The icing on the scone, so to speak, is that Donna takes the woman’s spot on the show and she eagerly shows off her baking skills. The fact that her husband is the lead detective in the case will not stop her from snooping around to find the killer.
In Cakewalk to Murder by MK Scott, Donna has her hands full, both in dough by being a contestant in The Majestic Bakeoff, a television show that came to town, and the murder of a contestant. The contestants, though, were not who they seemed, but were all playing a role given to them by the director, so Donna had a harder job of determining who among them was a murderer. What I liked about Calkwalk to Murder were the red herrings sprinkled throughout and the side stories of Donna’s mother, who secretly took off to who knows where, and Ten, her college-aged assistant and his girl troubles. The recipes at the back of the book are an added bonus for The Painted Lady Inn fans. A perfect story for readers who love a good mystery.
