The beautiful, full-page illustrations will draw readers into the book Butterfly Love From Above. Author Melissa Stuart takes us on an adventure—both real and imagined. This story tackles the difficult topic of grief and provides some coping mechanisms for dealing with the loss of a loved one. I believe children and adults can benefit from reading stories on how to recognize grief symptoms and strategies for dealing with a loss, which can be a disability, dementia, or death. Children and adults may recognize the symptoms of grief, but sometimes, they’re not so obvious and people may scream or act out in unpredictable ways. What are some ways of recognizing and dealing with bereavement? We all experience loss sometime in our lives: the death of a pet or loved one, a friendship, a boyfriend or girlfriend, or the slow decline of a person with dementia.
The images of puddle water splashing and running through sunflowers are very realistic looking. Illustrator Kate Solenova has created some inviting artwork to fill each page with beauty in Butterfly Love From Above. It’s like the artist is taking us on a journey of adventure and discovery and I want to join her. Author Melissa Stuart weaves us through an encounter with grief and learning to control the highs and lows of a loss—whether it’s a death, disability, or dementia. Learning how to move on might be a reminder to “always look up” or to be mindful of the world around us: what do you see, what do you hear, what do you smell? Maybe it’s the touch of an animal like a horse to remind us or the flutter of a butterfly to bring back awe and wonder to our lives or to allow us to reminisce. Butterflies have long been a symbol of transformation or change. Some believe if a butterfly or bird lingers near you, they’re bringing a message from a loved one that has passed. We need only to “always look up."
