Bunny Hunt by Lucy Simon is a simple and sweet book for toddlers. Children are tasked with finding a bunny. Each spread has a few simple lines of text followed by a photo of an animal wearing bunny ears. The hunt begins and each page starts with "You are not a bunny. You are a …." The animals that appear are a mix of familiar, like a frog and cat, to more exotic, like a meerkat and a sloth. The text and layout are clear and bold, and the pictures are imaginative and playful. After listening to Bunny Hunt being read to them a few times, kids will be able to read it themselves.
Bunny Hunt is a beautifully crafted book for young children. Lucy Simon understands what will capture the attention of a toddler. The concept is simple yet engaging and will have kids eagerly turning the pages to see what animal will show up next. The photos are the best! Some of the animals have traditional bunny ears on them, but others are much cleverer. The bird's "bunny ears" are feathers sticking up, and the frog's "bunny ears" are my favorite. The repeated phrase is an excellent early literacy skill that helps beginning readers use repetition and picture clues to read the book themselves. As a retired children's librarian, Bunny Hunt is a book, I would recommend to parents who are looking for easy readers that their older children could read to younger siblings. Bunny Hunt is a fun and charming read guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
