In Sherry Ellis’ Bubba and Squirt’s Legend of the Lost Pearls, readers are taken on a ride through time and into an adventure filled with mythology, family bonds, and high-stakes challenges. Bubba and Squirt are two courageous siblings who dive headfirst into another perilous task; traveling through time and visiting a place full of Japanese lore to save their father who is trapped by an ancient curse. The tale begins with a nightmare sequence that sets the tone for the duo’s dangerous yet thrilling journey. Through their journey, they must successfully change events along the way and get to their father before it’s too late.

Sherry Ellis is a master of her craft, infusing Japanese mythology into the plot, introducing characters like Hoori and Hoderi, who drive the central conflict. The historical and fantastical elements are balanced nearly seamlessly with modern humor and sibling banter, making this story as entertaining as it is educational. Bubba’s relatable fears and Squirt’s determined bravery offer a perfect contrast, highlighting the importance of teamwork and resilience. Grandpa’s magical expertise and their mother’s unwavering determination further enrich this ensemble, demonstrating the power of intergenerational cooperation. The pacing is excellent, with tension and stakes building steadily as the siblings tackle magical trials, navigate through time, and confront mythical adversaries. They experience spine-chilling spider dreams and endure the complex task of bending time itself. The narrative offers the perfect mix of action, suspense, and heartwarming moments. Bubba and Squirt's Legend of the Lost Pearls is great for middle-grade readers who enjoy mythology-themed adventures, fans of Percy Jackson, and anyone drawn to tales of family loyalty and personal courage.
