Brothers In Arms: Memoirs of Veterans, Victims, Heroes and Survivors of World War II, Korea & The Vietnam War is a work of non-fiction in the historical and memoir sub-genres, and was penned by author James Downey. Written for adult readers, the work does contain some graphic depictions of intense military combat and other traumatic experiences of war which some readers may find distressing or triggering. The work recounts truly remarkable deeds and feats of endurance and courage which are based on different interviews and accounts given to the author. Putting a human face to history, the work covers many real-life experiences and moments which are far from the school curriculum.
Author James Downey treats his subject matter with an enormous amount of respect and reverence, and this is clear on every page of his diligent account of the human faces of war and conflict. The interviews are translated into a book format with heart and clarity, delivering a no-holds-barred look at the tragic impact which war can have on mental health, as well as celebrating the bravery and heroism of the many subjects within the book. I also found the inclusion of the photographs and document replicas to be really enlightening and educational, as well as putting faces to the names in the text and humanizing their emotive stories all the more. The book is like walking through a rich museum filled with the real echoes and horrors of war. Overall, I would highly recommend Brothers In Arms to all military memoir enthusiasts.
