Broken In: A Novel in Stories by Jadi Campbell is a wonderful collection of short stories that bring together the worlds of compelling characters that readers will love. The reader already notices the wonderful prose in the first story in this gorgeous collection, “Hit and Run,” where Lou reveals to someone significant to him for the first time that he’s had more than sisters. In fact, he’s had a twin brother, and the way he talks about it is quirky and engaging: “Had. What is there to say? His name was Joe. Joey. He lived, he died. He's gone, I'm here. Although I wonder sometimes what it would have been like the other way around.” From this point on, the reader is taken on a roller-coaster ride with these exciting stories, featuring love, accidents, and disappearance. The stories feature great settings and readers will feel as though they are part of the action.
Broken In: A Novel in Stories has a fascinating cast of quirky characters and readers will enjoy riding along with them. One of the things I loved about this book is the setting that comes alive through colorful and powerful descriptions. Right from the beginning of the story when Lou talks about “Italian,” the evocation of Italian food already adds color to the setting. The stories are well plotted and the characters play their roles wonderfully in it. From the great writing to the awesome plotting, to the compelling characters, Jadi Campbell crafts stories that will transport readers into an exciting world and into the inner workings of memorable characters.
