Broken Chains, a short story by Rebecka Vigus, tells a breathtaking and interesting tale of trust lost and gained by a single mother of two kids whose parents passed away 10 years ago. She takes on the difficult challenges of her job, dealing with drunken and abusive customers. The dimming of the stage lights are enough to soothe Dixie, a dancer at Holler Club, before she goes home. Tom, the bartender, cares about Dixie and her kids, protecting both their safety and health. One day, she and her family confront a bitter reality when going to church. Her past is never forgotten, nor forgiven. Ned, a well-known lawyer, advises Dixie to divorce her imprisoned husband Robert, but she refuses in the belief Tom has sent him to convince her. Dixie’s husband’s friend harasses her, but is this last conflict the end of all the troubles lingering from her past?
Rebecka Vigus’ Broken Chains reminds us of two big lessons in life. One is that there are no permanently closed doors when it comes to trusting someone and when one door closes, another one opens. The other lesson is that our past never forgets and forgives what we have said and done. We are part of it and there’s no way to escape. I enjoyed reading this fascinating story from the first line to the last. The story’s plot is simple, engaging, and keeps the reader enthralled to the end. I recommend this book to short story readers, both novice and professional. I’m sure I will enjoy other stories from this author. Rebecka has the potential to be a great short story writer with her ability to create a captivating plot like the one she created for Broken Chains, with more well-developed characters, settings, incidents and twists.
