Bright Lies is a work of fiction in the suspense, psychological thriller, and interpersonal drama sub-genres, and was penned by author A. A. Abbott. Written for adult reading audiences, the work does contain moderate use of explicit language, graphic violence, and reference to potentially triggering material such as underage sex and rape. The story centers around Emily, who experiences abuse at just fourteen from her mother’s new husband. When Emily escapes and starts living on the streets, reformed sinner Jack comes into her life. But when her abuser begins to track her down, Emily must race for her life, and Jack must weigh the true cost of helping her against his own future.
Author A. A. Abbott has crafted a truly chilling thriller novel stacked with realism, heartbreak, and a powerful determination to survive. One of the things which I really admired about the work was the commitment to the close narration of central protagonist Emily, whose journey through abuse is accurately painful, but also showcases an inspiring resilience despite the circumstances. The plot was well-paced to deliver these highs and lows, with atmospheric choices in the descriptive language that present the harsh reality of street life and all its rough edges. David was a chilling antagonist indeed, but never overplayed or cartoony, and this gives the work its most sinister moments, with compelling drama that will keep you turning page after page. Overall, I would highly recommend Bright Lies to fans of well-penned and deep psychological drama.
