Breaking Worlds is Book 5 in the Lisen of Solsta series by D. Hart St. Martin, an epic fantasy and a tale of magic, courage and a broken world. Thristas and Garla are on the brink of destruction, and heroes Lisen and Korin are troubled, plagued by the guilt of blood on their hands. Lisen has lost her eldest child to religion and politics and she blames her husband for the loss. There is an acute loneliness that eats deep into her and a suffocating darkness that she can’t assuage, neither with magic nor with her strength. With Korin moving away into the desert, can Lisen provide the leadership her people need when her inner world is crumbling and an impending war is on the horizon? Can she give the love that her two children need?
Action-packed, poignantly written, and featuring compelling characters, this book is a gripping entry in the series and it showcases the author’s gift for storytelling and plot. The narrative is character driven and it features well written scenes, emotionally and psychologically rich characters and techniques that make the story an exciting read. It begins with Lisen sitting in her study, mournful and lonely, disenchanted because of the death of Rinli. The reader is introduced to the conflict right off the bat and the emotions of the characters come out clearly. D. Hart St. Martin’s prose is fluid and the narrative flows gracefully, done with great dialogues and impeccable world building. Great pacing and ingenuity in plot development. I love to see what drives a character, and this author makes me see it clearly through the characters. Breaking Worlds is suspenseful, gripping, and a work of great entertainment.
