Katie Pye has written half-a-dozen Fairytale Fraud books in which she tells a different, but just as likely, version of well-known stories. Breaking News is her charming version of Humpty Dumpty. Humpty’s dad is the safety-minded king who keeps the doors to the kingdom locked and never wants anything to change. Humpty wants more. He’s an adventurous youth. He breaks his dad’s rule and climbs the wall. As Dad feared, he falls. But, that’s only the beginning. I don’t want to give away the book’s key surprise, but I will tell you Humpty doesn’t want to be put back together again! Katie Pye’s Breaking News features fairytale-quality illustrations by Magnus Blomster that add wow to the story.
What if Humpty Dumpty’s fall from the wall was only the beginning of his adventure, rather than the end? What if other residents of the Kingdom of Eggsville copied Humpty’s example? What if even the stodgy old king became curious? Told in rhyme, this alternate history of Humpty Dumpty’s great fall makes change look like an adventure instead of something to fear. The text bounces cheerily around the pages. Magnus Blomster’s art gives a reassuring feel to this new world. Katie Pye’s vision goes far beyond the old “you have to break an egg to make an omelet” that I grew up with. What’s inside the egg craves freedom. Breaking News by Katie Pye, illustrated by Magnus Blomster, is a story children will want to read more than once to experience and re-experience that new way of experiencing the world.
