Bravo and Elphie is a children’s book written by Hagit R. Oron and Or Oron. When Elphie receives a pet rat from his parents, Elphie is afraid to go near it or touch it for fear of hurting it. Named Bravo, the rat is filled with energy and excitement and wants to play. Elphie’s mother suggests taking Bravo to the local park where they can both play. Bravo climbs up to high places where Elphie is afraid to go. The monkey bars are too high and Elphie is afraid he'll fall. When Bravo climbs the slippery slide, he is stuck because he is suddenly afraid to slide down. Elphie must face his fear of heights if he is to rescue his new friend and pet, Bravo, from a very scary place. With gentle coaxing from his mother and his best friend, Elphie is determined to climb high and bring Bravo home safely.
Hagit and Or Oron have cleverly penned a tale which shows a child that sometimes the only thing to be afraid of is fear itself. At first, Elphie was afraid to interact with Bravo due to him being so tiny, and Elphie was scared that he would step on him or hurt him. But when he saw Bravo in trouble, his love and determination to rescue his little pet conquered the fear he had for heights and in regards to interacting with Bravo. By the end of the day, Elphie’s emotional attachment and love for Bravo was so strong that he wanted to watch him fall asleep, showing that a beautiful friendship and bond had been forged between the pair. I enjoyed reading Bravo and Elphie, and feel this book would be best stocked in kindergarten and home libraries for reading to a child at bedtime, instilling the messages that love is stronger than fear, and a pet’s well being is of the utmost importance.
