In Branded in Oasis we finally get up close and personal with Kade Blackwell and Skylar Rutherford. Skylar and Kade met initially in Stranded in Oasis where their first meeting was literally accidental. She is driving too fast and runs into him as he is testing out a motorcycle for a client of his garage. From the moment they meet it is explosive and filled with chemistry and tension of the sexual variety. Verna Clay does such an awesome job describing Kade that you can’t really blame Skye for snapping his photo whenever she got the chance. Unfortunately, Kade has his own bias against spoiled rich girls, which he is so certain Skylar is that he avoids her like the plague…until he can’t. When his grandmother needs her hip replaced, Kade finally gives in to Skye and asks her to create a portfolio for him. It is during these photo sessions that the agreed-upon truce turns to friendship and hidden desires.
I love a story where differences are overcome and Branded in Oasis certainly has that in spades. Although Oasis is filled with a ton of colorful characters that someone like Skye could easily mock, she feels a certain sense of peace in this quiet, simple life so different from her globetrotting existence. Kade keeps his distance from Skye, despite his growing attraction, because of who he thinks she is and it is such a treat to sit back and watch him eat a big helping of crow. Verna Clay is an expert at building likable yet truly weird characters that you can’t help but love. She has the ability to show that it is only what’s on the outside that separates Kade and Skye, because the things they really want in life—family and a real home—are what will eventually bring them together.
