Boys Like Me by R.L. Clements opens with Roy, a 12-year-old boy learning about life and its many challenges, of which hate seems to be at the forefront. He also discovers true love and friendship for the first time in Gary, a boy his age who has just moved to town, and Mrs. Plowman, a black woman who teaches him valuable lessons about life, love, and tolerance. Roy struggles to understand the concept of racism and what it means, never being fully satisfied with the answers he receives from those closest to him while at the same time trying to sort out his feelings for Gary, the first boy he's ever loved.
I knew Boys Like Me would be a great book, and I was right. It has a To Kill a Mockingbird feel and sends a beautiful message. The main character, Roy, is adorable and easy to love. I was completely entranced with him, and how he tells his story is hilarious. Boys Like Me is serious and funny, with ingredients that create more than a good book. Clements has a way of bringing the characters to life, most of whom resonated with me, Mrs. Plowman especially. Her strong personality is just what the sensitive and introverted Roy needs to learn to love himself again and grow into his own.
