Bound: The Silverton Chronicles by Carmen Fox is a well-written urban fantasy romance whose main protagonist, the vampire Florian, possesses the good looks of an Edward Cullen and the conflicted soul of Rice’s LeStat. As the story opens, Florian (a.k.a. Flo) appears to have turned his back on his vampire roots and has embraced his new family, a pack of werewolves headed by an alpha called Parker. For the most part, life is pretty good at the moment, but being part of a pack of werewolves means that Flo has to suppress the darker aspects of his vampire tendencies. He is tight with Ivy, Parker’s girl, who’s also his associate at work. There are some things that bother Flo where Ali, another werewolf in their pack, is concerned and he knows that the time will come when he will have to prove himself to his new family – he just doesn’t expect that time is now.
Bound: The Silverton Chronicles packs a solid punch. Fox’s writing is crisp and engaging. She does a terrific job portraying Flo’s inner turmoil as he struggles to contain the vampire tendencies that lurk beneath his well-schooled surface. There is violence and plenty of blood – this is a vampire story, after all – and when Flo capitulates and gives in to “his need to feed,” she handles the situation with civility and a touch of humor that will have readers chuckling. Case in point: when Flo is invited by Gino and his sister to dinner at his father’s new digs, there are three unknown people sitting at the dinner table who we later discover are “dessert.” It’s these little morsels of deliciousness that give the book – and its author – a genuine stamp of authenticity and set it apart from other books in the urban fantasy genre. A great effort and an entertaining read overall.
