In Boomerville at Ballymegille by Caroline James, the death of her husband leads Hattie Mulberry back to Hotel Boomerville. Starting anew, Hattie resumes her former position as manager as new residents arrive to experience the wonderful activities that the place has to offer. Better yet, Jo Docherty - friend and owner of Hotel Boomerville - expands the business and the residents come along for the grand opening of Boomerville Manor in southern Ireland. However, problems soon ensue. Ex-cabaret singer Melissa Mercer can't seem to get away from her abusive husband while ex-historian Bill Bradbury can't get rid of his dead mother's tormenting voice in his head. What will happen to their Irish holiday retreat?
Poignant, adventurous, and funny, the plot of Boomerville at Ballymegille is also filled with heartbreak, fear, and wicked intentions. Characters vary in their depth. The aging aquatic team, Boomerville Babes, is quite the hoot, and Ness, Bunty, and little Teddy are loveable four-legged characters. The main focus is balanced between Jo and Hattie dealing with unexpected changes, their business expansion, and the experience of their residents, particularly Melissa and Bill. It's easy to root for them to be free of their predicament and fully enjoy the next stage of their life. Traveling to southern Ireland both ease and exacerbate Melissa's and Bill's problems in ways that they could never expect, which also leads to surprising outcomes for readers. All in all, this is an entertaining contemporary tale from Caroline James and I look forward to reading more of Boomerville's adventure.
