In "Boom and Crash Musician", Sam Denov tells his poignant story as a child of a struggling immigrant family from Mogilev, now known as Belarus, in Chicago during 1930's Great Depression. The youngest of five children who lost his mother to suicide, Denov inherited his father's disciplined nature to overcomes life's hardships. Inspired by the French Horn played by his brother, he chose classical music and was a very talented young percussionist and timpanist, and he even studied under the famous Roy C. Knapp. He also recounted the attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 1941. Married his sweetheart Charlotte, and blessed with two sons, Denov later became a self-employed labor consultant but still performed occasionally when requested.
As the author was only five when his mother died, unfortunately I as a reader didn't get to know more about Ida Denov. Nonetheless, the Denov family was blessed to have Jacob Denov as a father, who anchored the family through hard times. The story about life in the Navy was educating and nostalgic and there were even funny moments. It gets a glimpse into the past, of some of Europe's history, the Great Depression, the war, and the 30's to 50's music scenes. Everything about the life back then was historically priceless for me and there was so much to be learned and enjoyed from this colorful, beautifully-written memoir. Despite the ups and downs, Sam Denov truly led a beautiful life and I'm glad he shared his story with the rest of the world.
