Bittersweet by Michele Barrow-Belisle is the second book in the Faerie Song Saga. Lorelei's entire world changed when she discovered that the hot new guy was actually a faerie prince and that she not only had her own faerie heritage, but it came with its own magical prophecy. She may be away from the Nevermore, but repercussions of her time there still haunt her. Danger lurks everywhere. When her enemy arrives in her world, the relationship she's finally been able to build with Adrius is threatened, along with everyone Lorelei loves. As an unknown force threatens to seal the veil between worlds permanently, a secret organization makes Lorelei an offer for a chance at happily ever after. She has no idea how to protect those she loves, which forces her to consider the dangerous offer. Time is running out and Lorelei will have to risk everything, even risk letting the darkness within consume her, if she's to stop the evil threatening her.
With a twist you honestly won't see coming, Michele Barrow-Belisle brings on the surprises, and dives further into this complicated love triangle. The love triangle is gritty and a little dark, but full of romance and danger and lots of complications as both are compelling characters that are committed to Lorelei and bring out different sides to her. Adrius and Zanthiel are such layered characters with both being tragic and flawed, yet redeemable and charismatic. Zanthiel is one of the Shadow fae and by all accounts he's deadly and dangerous, but the more his character is explored, the more his redeemable qualities are shown. Adrius is a stoic and dashing knight, but his bond to Venus is a complication in his and Lorelei's relationship, which makes their romance tragic and full of obstacles. The history of their hatred for each other finally digs into the root and reveals, at least partway, what caused their falling out.
More time is spent in the human world which gives readers a chance to see Lorelei with her friends, and to see them brought into the story a bit more, though only one really gets the chance to briefly shine. In an interesting twist, the popular girl that constantly bullied her is seen in a more decent light, which makes an intriguing contrast to the first book. An amazing sequel, Bittersweet is a breathtaking adventure from beginning to end, with romance, a love triangle, danger, and magic.
