I loved Betsy’s Philadelphia Adventure: From the Betsy Ross House to the University of Pennsylvania and I think children will, too! The story by authors Marcia Sawyer and Sandy Mayer is a scavenger hunt that takes place in Philadelphia. Betsy the red squirrel receives an invitation to Benji’s party—but she has to solve the mystery: where does Benji the Northern Grey squirrel live? I enjoyed the story and want to tour all the tourist places mentioned in the story. I think parents will enjoy reading this book with their children and learning about the landmarks of Philadelphia. Perhaps a family trip is in order to discover and tour these historic museums and buildings. This book represents a wonderful blend of an interesting story and outstanding illustrations.
The illustrations of landmarks, people, and squirrels are very well done and will invite children to read Betsy’s Philadelphia Adventure. Illustrators Milena and Jelena Vitorovic have done an outstanding job. There’s so much to see in each illustration that I think children and parents will want to read it again and again. Children will enjoy tracing the maps with a finger, showing the route that Betsy took to find Benji. Authors Marcia Sawyer and Sandy Mayer have coordinated to create a wonderful story that takes us through the downtown streets of Philadelphia to solve the mystery in the invitation. I love how they weave favorite local snacks into the story. Their story makes me want to travel there right now. I think school libraries, public libraries, and homes should find a spot on their shelves for this educational and entertaining book.
