For new public speakers and experienced public speakers alike, Glenn Gibson’s Before the Mic: How to Compose Meaningful, Memorable, and Motivational Presentations is both informative and enjoyable to read. He uses composing music throughout the book as an analogy to connect with his audience, the readers, with his aMMMazing Model being the crux of the book. The MMM stands for Meaningful, Memorable, and Motivational, which really are critical to making speeches special, and he shows how to do it well throughout the book by giving specific steps. The Memorable and Motivational steps are those worth noting, as those are key elements in providing an outstanding speech.
There is excellent information on preparing your speech, handouts, and a specific PowerPoint formula that will make the speaker’s presentations even more impactful. Further, he offers a Tools and Templates Section that will assist the speaker in providing a winning presentation. When it comes to success in speaking, it is really about the fundamentals with an engaging introduction, well-developed body, and a conclusion that wraps it up and is motivating. Mr. Gibson has successfully made the fundamentals interesting with great examples and steps that can benefit speakers both new and established. I found it very informative, engaging, and helpful in considering ways to improve my own speeches. Before the Mic: How to Compose Meaningful, Memorable, and Motivational Presentations by Glenn Gibson is a book worth reading and incorporating in public speaking of all types. It is easy to read, provides valuable advice, and is fun to read. I highly recommended it!
