Beautifully Blended by Sonji K. Grandy is a guide to helping present-day families come together as a cohesive family unit. The author was born in Panama and was the youngest of four girls. When her father left their home, her mother took the family back to the United States where they all grew up in one of the worst housing projects in New Jersey. Throughout the years, her father remarried several times and her mother remarried twice. Half siblings were added to their family and new parental figures. The author takes the reader through her family history to the blended family she has now co-created with her partner. She emphasizes that the actions of parents have lasting consequences for their children and that love and patience are vital to establishing a cohesive family unit.
Sonji K. Grandy writes effortlessly, sharing her experiences concerning the blending of families. She writes in an engaging style, which makes it easy for the reader to apply her approach in their own life. I liked that she prioritizes the parents' role in their children’s lives and that the children should always come first. I also liked her approach that every child born into the family should not have any labels such as being step or half-siblings. I highly recommend Beautifully Blended for everyone as we are all part of a family. In our modern times, families are often complex and layered. Sonji delivers a powerful message that when adults work together, anything is possible to create a healthy family unit.
