Little Bean was a special cat who was rescued as a kitten. He made a lot of improvements in his trouble walking and keeping his balance as a kitten with the help of his new owners, Ryan and Kate; Francesca, his adoptive mother; and Petunia, his adoptive sister. Hercules, a Boxer puppy, was brought home one day to join the family. Bean was a little scared of Hercules and he preferred watching Hercules from a distance. Slowly the pets became friends and they started to play together. The pets were scared of thunderstorms and they usually hid in different places the whole time. One such storm was so massive that the power went off, and Ryan and Kate had to have a candlelight dinner. Bean was under the sofa and he was terrified. A strong gust of wind blew into the kitchen and the candle on the kitchen table fell down, causing the nearby curtains to catch fire. Though Bean was scared, he knew he had to do something. What did he do to save the day?
Bean Saves the Day by Rey A. Banda is an adorable story that conveys an important message of facing challenges and conquering fear. Chris Sweet makes the story, the message, and the characters come alive with his wonderful illustrations. It is nice to see Bean turning into a hero that day and what makes the pets in the story special is that they all are based on the author's real pets. The book is good to have in a personal collection as well as on the school and public library shelves because of the message it conveys. Bean's story is the best way to encourage children to tackle the challenges they face in a positive way and conquer their fears, especially when they have to deal with a dangerous situation.
