Little Bean was a special cat who was rescued as a kitten. He made a lot of improvements in his trouble walking and keeping his balance as a kitten with the help of his new owners, Ryan and Kate; Francesca, his adoptive mother; and Petunia, his adoptive sister. Hercules, a Boxer puppy, was brought home one day to join the family. Bean was a little scared of Hercules and he preferred watching Hercules from a distance. Slowly the pets became friends and they started to play together. The pets were scared of thunderstorms and they usually hid in different places the whole time. One such storm was so massive that the power went off, and Ryan and Kate had to have a candlelight dinner. Bean was under the sofa and he was terrified. A strong gust of wind blew into the kitchen and the candle on the kitchen table fell down, causing the nearby curtains to catch fire. Though Bean was scared, he knew he had to do something. What did he do to save the day?

Bean Saves the Day by Rey A. Banda is an adorable story that conveys an important message of facing challenges and conquering fear. Chris Sweet makes the story, the message, and the characters come alive with his wonderful illustrations. It is nice to see Bean turning into a hero that day and what makes the pets in the story special is that they all are based on the author's real pets. The book is good to have in a personal collection as well as on the school and public library shelves because of the message it conveys. Bean's story is the best way to encourage children to tackle the challenges they face in a positive way and conquer their fears, especially when they have to deal with a dangerous situation.

Bean Saves the Day is written by special education teacher Rey A Banda and illustrated by Chris Sweet, who also loves cats. It tells the story of a rescue cat, Bean, with special needs (as a kitten, he had trouble walking and keeping his balance), but despite this, he manages to save his adoptee parents from a fire that breaks out in their home. The major crux of the story is how Bean has to overcome his fear of lightning and thunder during a storm to run upstairs and wake Ryan and Kate, his owners, for them to put out the fire in time. How he develops a friendship with their Boxer puppy, Hercules, is also shown. Usually, a dog barks at the first sign of danger, but, as Hercules sleeps under Ryan and Kate’s bed, he is not the first to witness the fire, so it is most definitely Bean that must save the day.

I loved the bright, comic-like illustrations provided by Chris Sweet for Bean Saves the Day. With clear graphic outlines, they perfectly suit the age group (one to twelve years) at which this picture book is targeted. The font is clear and well-spaced, which facilitates reading of the text by young readers, too. The additional photos and biographical information at the end help to contextualize the story, and can be explained to a younger child as well. The story itself is exciting, and Rey A Banda clearly shows his background through the empathy that he expresses with both the animal and human characters. The message regarding the dangers of an exposed flame is also extremely well conveyed. In brief, Bean Saves the Day is an extremely well-conceived book that deserves to be made available to all children, whether through direct purchase or from the local resource center.
