Some books broaden the horizons of those who read them, introducing them to subjects they had previously ignored. This happened to me with Battle Carried: Imperial Japanese Tiger Art Good Luck Flags of World War Two by Michael A. Bortner. Battle Carried is the second book that Bortner dedicates to Japanese signed flags, of which he has been a collector for over fifty years. Specifically, Battle Carried provides in-depth explanations of the representation of the tiger as a symbol and reveals its meaning through an accurate description of each piece, also including many anecdotes and stories. In short, Battle Carried is a book that will not fail to entertain a curious reader.
I must confess that Battle Carried was a real surprise for me. I never thought Japanese signed flags could be such a great subject - for me, it is so unusual that this is the first time I have read something about it. For this reason, I am grateful to Bortner for writing this beautiful book. Battle Carried shows you many magnificent images of flags, and the author's deep knowledge makes the subject enjoyable. The narration is never dull, and the many anecdotes keep the reader's attention alive. It is always a pleasure to read books written by experts. They make their subjects fascinating, even to those who are not well versed on the topic. Battle Carried has opened my eyes to a world I did not know, and I am sure every reader who will look at these pages will be as enthused as I am.
