The origins of Martin Groveman’s passion for playing hoops dates back to his seventh grade under the mentorship of Coach Aaron Venty Lieb. In Basketball Is in My Blood: A Basketball Addict’s Autobiography, Coach Venty shows the young Groveman the rudiments of the game--from moves to strategies. It kept the youngster occupied in his growing up years so that the hardcourt became his second home. But his relationship with basketball was not without hardships, as he found in his teens that his height of five feet nine inches was rather short by basketball standards, and being left-handed added to his travails. Groveman never made it to the NBA, but his life’s journey contains all the drama and excitement that one can find in watching a basketball game. From waiting tables to working as a principal, his story is an inspiring reminder that wealth and fame aside, our dreams can be as big as we want them to be.
Basketball Is in My Blood is a memoir that can well serve as a reference to the New York basketball scene from the late forties. Photographs lend authenticity to Groveman’s accounts and his keen recall of stats can only be described as impeccable. He chronicles his sad and joyous moments both on and off the court. Groveman may never have played alongside NBA greats, but he etches his legacy in basketball by inspiring the young and holding true not only to basketball but also to the people who have faith in him. Most of all, he valued connections and it made his journey worth telling. And this is perhaps how this book came into existence. Once an athlete, always an athlete. This is why basketball is in Martin Groveman’s blood.
