Baby Bird is out collecting seeds when it starts to rain. Worried about the rain, she wonders if it'll ever stop. When she asks Grandma, she's told the story of Noah and his ark and the promise that God made to Noah. As Baby Bird listens, Grandma tells her about how God wanted to punish his people for being evil. He tells Noah, whom he finds to be good, true and faithful, to build an ark. As Noah builds the ark, the animals pass along the message and soon they arrive in twos to help finish the ark and to join Noah just as it starts to rain.

At the end of the story, Baby Bird worries that God will punish his people again and make it rain for forty days and nights. Grandma Bird points to the rainbow that signals the end of the rain storm and tells Baby Bird that the rainbow is the symbol of God's promise to never flood the world again. Baby Bird admires the rainbow and feels secure now that she knows about God's promise.

Barbara Lamping has written and illustrated a charming retelling of the story of Noah's ark. Baby Bird's Rainbow is beautifully illustrated to complement the simple story as told by Grandma to Baby Bird. The animals had a part in this story, as much as humans did, and this retelling supports the idea of God's promise holding true for all living creatures. This is a beautiful retelling of the story of Noah's ark from a different perspective.
