Awakening is a call for all Christians to have a renewal of their walk with the Lord. The author reminds us that we are to be “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Romans 12:11 NIV.” When we first come to the Lord we are filled with excitement and zeal. Weems reminds us that we should never lose that first love for the Lord. We should always be filled with excitement.
The author offers readers an “Awakening, 21 Day Plan.” He believes, that by following this plan closely, the reader will not only draw closer to the Lord but will have a renewed passion and zeal. The plan includes fasting and prayer.
I have mixed feelings on this book. I agree that I want to live closer to the Lord. I agree that fasting and prayer will renew one's passion for God. However, I’ve had many mountaintop experiences. I’m not sure we are supposed to live on that mountaintop. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that we will not experience adversity. We are to rejoice in our time of trials. I am concerned that some may misinterpret the author as saying life will be easier, rosier, etc. if we draw closer to the Lord. This could mislead new Christians. No matter how close we walk with the Lord, we will still have trials; but, we will have an inner joy that sustains us, no matter what we face.
Awakening is well-written, easy to understand, and will bless those who read it. This book would make a great Lenten study. The end of the book has devotions to go along with the plan. All in all I like this book.
