Awaken The Three (Book Two of the Highglade Series) by D.L. Jennings is a sweeping fantasy novel for the Young Adult audience. An exiled general named Aldis Tennech wants to take back his former glory, but an emperor and mysterious forces stand in his way, war is brewing in the north, and enemies are threatening annihilation. Chaos rains down everywhere, and the question is, who will survive these ancient and epic battles of mortals and gods, and how will they win? The fate of every living creature is at stake. This expansive drama is a fantasy fan's dream come true; the kind of book you can savor and read more than once.
There are so many things to love about this novel. Jennings is gifted at story-telling and world-building, and other skills such as creating full-blooded, memorable characters (like Duna, and especially Tennech, whose character reminds me of a tiger pacing in a cage, ready to spring and be unleashed), and interesting, moody settings. The conflicts he puts his characters in are the kind you would expect in grand fantasy, but this author is clever at avoiding cliches and predictability. His phrasing is poetic and robust, and his long, luxurious descriptions stir the imagination. If you appreciate military stories where creation fights death, where there is mythology, weapons of daggers, bows, and arrows, and are a fan of the Highglade series, you won't be disappointed. The violence is appropriately realistic, and the overall appeal could stand alongside Game of Thrones or other popular epics. Awaken The Three by D.L. Jennings is a completely absorbing novel for your fantasy collection.
