When you talk to yourself, what do you say? What questions do you ask? Do you ever get the answers that you seek? The author, Amanda Baker, takes the reader on a journey to see through her eyes between her youth and adult years. The various emotional stages that she encountered are captured in this inspirational poetry book, Ask: A Collection of Poetry, Lyrics, and Words. Just like adults have challenges and many questions, the youth and young adults do too but we never seem to write them down. This book offers a mirror in helping to navigate during those tough times of self-discovery through words of expression. Poetry speaks while it connects. The author wants to have a dialogue with the reader with this challenge: "I want you to want to ask me the questions that you have left when you finish this book. Read it again. If you still have questions, find me. Ask. I’ll likely ask you the questions too. If no one asks, then you go and share anyway."
Every day we go through challenges but unless you journal or capture the moment, you'll never know whether you won or lost. I enjoyed reading Ask: A Collection of Poetry, Lyrics, and Words because Amanda Baker not only revealed her soul but was able to channel the energy into healing and self-acceptance. There were several poems I enjoyed that displayed the humanity of little things. Simple things tend to make the most impact when connecting with others. This is why the poems My Why (Now), Dance Wheel, and Karma Kick Back spoke volumes to me. Take the time to begin your journey to connecting, embracing, and accepting that inner child. Highly recommended.
