Art from Uranus by Rob Coxon is a book containing images with the author’s paintings and descriptions of what they represent. The book starts with a humorous written foreword by Ms. Denise Gold, followed by an introduction in which the author presents his journey from graduation from art school and teaching art to high school pupils to his involvement in music and how he started to paint again after years of abandoning this pursuit. Coxon consider himself an outsider and, in his view, his art is far away from mainstream art. The book continues with descriptions of the paintings and closes with pictures of his work.
As someone who likes to paint and enjoys looking at art, no matter how traditional, modern, different, or innovative, I enjoyed looking at the pictures as well as reading the explanations for each of them. Although the order is inverse, it hasn't affected the enjoyment - on the contrary, it made me imagine how the paintings would look after reading their descriptions. Then each image is accompanied by further explanations which are quite humorous. Coxon did say that his art is not meant to be serious and this is clear, starting with the cover image. Coxon’s book is refreshing and imaginative, a breath of fresh air in today’s contemporary art scene. His characters with exposed brains and depicted in bright colors look like they come from another planet, hence the title Art from Uranus. Also the subtitle Fine Art Dumbed Down for the General Population could be read as a catch line that criticizes elitism in art.
