Around New Zealand In 14 Days by Herman and Pamela Odijk is their personal photo journal. They took four two-week Princess Cruises voyages to New Zealand between 2012 and 2015. Brief descriptions accompany many photos, and some are typical of what you would expect. Others, like the tour bus they saw in Auckland, North Island, shaped like a great shark, are included for uniqueness or quirkiness. The authors chose to travel by cruise and tour bus. In this way, the travel became part of their destination. Many other experiences colored their journey, replacing hours of sitting in planes and airports. Cruising allowed them to savor the anticipation of the next port of call instead of the rush associated with air travel. Engaging with other travelers, absorbing the atmosphere, and hearing the stories of the local inhabitants enriched their experience.
Herman and Pamela Odijk explain in the introduction to Around New Zealand In 14 Days that their photo journal is an introduction to New Zealand, the people, and the places, with many photos of places that others may not see. Their book is intended to create an interest, and the reader can resort to the internet for more information, which will be current. If you are considering traveling to New Zealand or contemplating a new destination for your next trip, this book could provide useful prompts as you plan your itinerary and help you explore the possibilities of cruising. An interesting and enjoyable browse, which did prompt my online research into Napier's Art Deco festival.
