Aria's Song, Book 1 in the Guardian series by R. Beach, takes place in a far off future dominated by technological advances and bio-engineering. Aria Wind is a part of the Guardians, a secret organization full of psychic operatives tasked with protecting the newly established United States government. After having just ousted a mad dictator, Aria and her group must ferret out any attempt to destroy the new, and far less bloodthirsty, seat of power. It's a daily battle, but while the Guardians had protected itself from outside forces, something more insidious was climbing up their ranks.
Betrayed, drugged, and tortured by someone she thought she could trust, Aria's Song begins with the aftermath of Aria's rescue and the effects of the poisonous drug flowing through her veins. Together with Taylor MacKay and Thorne Cole, they hunt for a cure and the person who has seeded chaos within the Guardians. But through despair there is hope, and despite the fact that Aria trusts no one, she soon finds herself falling in love.
Aria's Song by R. Beach is an action-packed read that delves into the sci-fi and the paranormal. Despite the thrilling beginning, the book starts off a little slow as Beach gives us a lot of information during the first couple of chapters. So much so that I was left wondering if I was reading a sequel and the author was getting us late-comers caught up. Despite the more Tell than Show aspect of the novel, Beach really shines when it comes to character interaction (Aria and Taylor fairly sizzle when they are together), as well as crafting a tightly woven mystery that will leave you guessing.
