Independence, uniqueness, and friendship are all celebrated in Pam Dworetz-Sofarelli's book Archie Finds His Voice. Archie is a guineafowl who is ready to leave the nest and explore the world. His mother encourages him but reminds him he can always find his way back to her. Archie nervously sets out and finds that not everyone accepts him. A little defeated, he heads back home ... only to discover some friends along the way. They are quite different, but they enjoy each other's company. They even discover that someone they thought might be an enemy turns out to be a friend as well. Archie gains confidence and pride in his uniqueness and vows to help others who feel ostracized as well.
Archie Finds His Voice encourages kids to accept themselves the way they are. Pam Dworetz-Sofarelli has included some lesser-known animals to tell her story, which makes it very effective. Kids will enjoy getting to know Archie and each of his unique friends. The illustrations by Rasel Rana are terrific. They are saturated with color and highlight Archie's emotions throughout the story. As a former children's librarian, I always appreciate when stories include sounds and repetitive refrains that children can chant along with. Archie's affirmation in this one, "I love that we're different. You're you, and I'm me," is a great one to instill in kids' brains. Archie Finds His Voice is a positive, uplifting story that will help children find their own voices and celebrate what makes them unique.
