Annalynn doesn’t expect to find her family sick in the living room, but that’s exactly what happens. When she tries to help out by giving them tissues, a strange thing occurs. Some strangers in red and blue force themselves into the house and steal their last box of tissues. Confused, Annalynn isn’t sure what is going on. When one of the strangers gives her a hat of pickled herring for letting them take the tissues, she has to tell her sick family there are none left. Then a man named Agent Rick appears, and she finds out he is a Canadian spy. Agent Rick needs Annalynn’s help to find the stolen box of tissues because if they let them get away with it, they will keep stealing. Upon seeing the strange gift she was given by the previous intruders, Agent Rick concludes that it’s the Norwegian Etterretningstjenesten that took the valued box. He then sends her on a mission to rescue the tissues before they use them all and there aren’t any left. Will she reach the Etterretningstjenesten in time and save what’s left of the tissues so her family can use them, or will all she have to show be an empty box?
I thought Annalynn The Canadian Spy: Terrible Tissues a hilarious and fun read. It’s so wacky that you will enjoy it. I think Annalynn is a fun and lovable character that any child would find fascinating. The story overall was crazy and out there but that’s what made it so enjoyable to read. I also liked how random Norwegian and French words and phrases were thrown into the mix. It’s a fun way to learn some words in a different language. Overall, I think Shawn Robinson did a wonderful job with this short chapter book. It’s very age-appropriate and a joy to read. I find myself curious about reading more of Annalynn’s adventures.
