Angelo Coming Home by Ron Cimbala is the delightful story of Angelo, the orphaned piglet who is adopted by an old man with a bushy white beard. Angelo is sure that they will become good friends and remain inseparable. He is kept with a motherly pig, Aunty Emily, and a companion, Freddie. They enjoy their life on the farm and the situations they find themselves in form the crux of the story; sometimes funny, heartrending, but always interesting. Angelo and Freddie always have something or other to do and when they get back to the barn, Aunty Emily would always lecture them.
The story captures the life of the piglets, Angelo and Freddie, and the times they have on the farm with Aunty Emily and the old man. It is a fun read and the illustrations are lively and adorable. They add color to the book and bring the characters and scenes alive. All the characters are nicely portrayed; whether it is Angelo, Freddie, the Old Man, Aunty Emily, the geese, or the horses, they put a smile on the faces of readers and make them want to visit the Old Man’s farm and meet them.
I love stories like this, simple and nice. It makes readers feel good and life on the farm gives a good vibe that borders on insouciance and calmness. It teaches children about life on a farm and the animals there. It’s a good bedtime story book and can be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries.
