Andrea and The Five-Day Challenge by Cindy K. Green is a delightful journey through the life of Andrea Jamison, age 16 (almost 17), at the Aubrey Christian Academy in North Carolina. Andrea’s parents, perhaps trying to live their dreams through Andrea, want her to “focus, focus, focus” upon practicing her piano playing so that she can get into a special school for dramatic arts and, hopefully, land a position at the Julliard School. Not only that, but Andrea’s parents don’t want her to date, or go to events like the homecoming dance, until she is 18 years old. Are these parents for real?
Into this mix comes handsome senior athlete Luke Ryan, freshly arrived from southern California. Luke helps Andrea pick up her dropped books one day and he is instantly smitten with her, as Andrea’s three friends keep pointing out to her. The problem is, Andrea has an incredibly poor self-image, and she is a little dense, as she fails to see how much Luke cares for her and she can hardly believe that debonair Luke Ryan could ever fall for a girl like her, rather than school snob Stephanie from the cheerleading squad. So will Andrea and Luke get together?
I thoroughly enjoyed Andrea and The Five-Day Challenge by Cindy K. Green. The novel’s target audience — teenage girls — will recognize themselves in Andrea’s friends, but hopefully not entirely in Andrea herself. Cindy K. Green knows how to keep readers turning the pages, chapter after chapter, to see if Andrea can ever overcome her poor self-image and get that Luke fella.
