An Age of Mist by Mathias G. B. Colwell is a thrilling short story set in a fantastical landscape that will intrigue and frighten readers. Young Santori has never seen the sun. Legends speak of a time before the Age of Mist called the Age of Fire. During this time, the sun shone every day and scorched the land, but then the mists came and shrouded the world, protecting its inhabitants from the damaging effects of the sun and allowing the world to heal. This blanket of fog comes with a price; the land is forever cloaked in darkness. The only time the fog breaks is at night, allowing Santori to catch glimpses of the moon. There are legends about this heavenly orb as well. It is said that when the Red Moon rises, it is a warning of the impending approach of nightmarish wraiths that will come to slake their thirst on the fog and their hunger on flesh. Only the sacred fire can destroy them, but oil is scarce. When the Red Moon rises, Santori will learn that there is truth in the old legends, and it will be up to him to protect those he loves.
Mathias G. B. Colwell’s story, An Age of Mist, is a fast-paced and exciting tale. Colwell creates in just a few pages a new and intriguing world for readers to explore. His writing is an enjoyable blend of fantasy, science fiction, and horror themes that make this a good read for fans of many different genres. My only complaint was that it was over too soon. Santori’s world is a compelling one that I wanted to explore further, and his adventure was over far too quickly. I highly recommend this story, and I hope to read more from this author.
