An Accidental Murder: A Yellow Cottage Cosy Mystery Book 1 (The Yellow Cottage Cosy Mysteries) by J. New is a short novella, but it offers a really big story. When Ella feels led to return to the seaside resort she went to with her family, she is drawn to the Yellow Cottage she'd always loved. Ella discovers it is for sale and immediately buys it. The cottage was owned by an elderly lady who lived there with her cat. Upon moving in, Ella finds the cat has been left as a gift for her, but Phantom is a special cat that can enter the house through the walls, since he is a ghost cat.
Ella takes the train to have Sunday lunch with her brother and sister-in-law and Peter, a man they think Ella might like. As she journeys home on the train, she notices a young girl in front of her and the young girl is waiting for her as she walks home. She does not speak, but Ella feels compelled to take her home. Ella soon realizes that this girl, whom she has named Poppy, is a ghost and has a connection with Peter. Ella and her sister-in-law, Ginny, soon find the reason for both Poppy and Phantom’s ghost visit and set out to solve things. The two quickly find themselves in danger, but forge ahead until they get all of the answers they need to solve the mystery.
An Accidental Murder is an unpredictable story with friendly ghosts and likeable characters. I read this in one night because it was just too good to put down. An Accidental Murder is the first in a series and I am anxiously awaiting the next one. I am not usually a big fan of ghost stories but J. New made mystery and magic a part of the story. An Accidental Murder is a quick read that has it all: mystery, detail, quirkiness and friendly ghosts - don’t pass it up.
